Overview
Spondylosis refers to degeneration that occurs in the spine. It is commonly referred to as “wear and tear” or arthritis. Spondylosis is a slowly progressing condition affecting both the soft tissue and bones of the spine including intervertebral discs, cartilage, and joints. This can result in back pain, stiffness, and nerve compression with shooting pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs.
Diagnosis
Spondylosis is diagnosed through a thorough history and physical exam and imaging studies including x-rays, MRI, and CT scan.
Treatment
In most cases, Spondylosis is treated with a broad spectrum of conservative treatments such as medications, physical therapy, injections, and alternative therapies including massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. We stress the importance of physical therapy for core and lower back strengthening in the setting of spondylosis as this has been shown to have significant benefit when managing pain, stiffness, and function. Uncommonly, surgical intervention may be indicated.
