SI Joint Pain/Sacroilitis

Overview

Sacroiliitis is a condition that refers to inflammation within the sacroiliac joint (SI joint). This inflammation results in buttock pain which can radiate down the legs or into the lower back. Most commonly, the pain is aggravated with walking upstairs or sitting for prolonged periods of time and can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life.

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of sacroiliitis is first suspected after a careful history and physical examination. The diagnosis can be confirmed through a diagnostic and therapeutic injection into the SI joint.

Treatment

Sacroiliitis is initially treated conservatively with medications, physical therapy, bracing, and injections. Surgery is the last line of treatment and is reserved for those patients who have failed extensive conservative treatment (see SI joint fusion).
