Overview
Spondylolisthesis refers to the malalignment of one vertebra in relation to the vertebra below it. Most commonly, this is caused by arthritis within the joints resulting in failure to maintain the vertebrae in proper alignment. This can cause shifting of the vertebrae forwards, backwards, or to the side creating back pain, stiffness, difficulty bringing your back through a full of motion, shooting pain, tingling, and numbness.
Diagnosis
Spondylolisthesis is commonly diagnosed using standing x-rays. MRI can be used when suspecting nerve compression due to spondylolisthesis.
Treatment
Treatment for spondylolisthesis is directed towards an individual patient’s symptoms. Most often, back pain and stiffness can be treated conservatively through a combination of medications, physical therapy, injections, and alternative therapies including massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. In the case of nerve compression or pain not improving with conservative measures, spinal fusion may be indicated to stabilize the spondylolisthesis.
