Overview

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat compression fractures which have failed to heal over time or have experienced rapid collapse. Two very small incisions are made just off the midline on either side of the spine. A canula is used to drill into the fractured vertebra and a balloon is expanded within the vertebral body, creating a cavity within the bone. The cavity is then filled with special cement, which quickly hardens to provide structural support and prevent further collapse of the vertebra.

Post operative expectations

Many patients report rapid relief of symptoms shortly after surgery. Activity is restricted for a short time after surgery. Most patients can return to work within 2 weeks of surgery and may return to full, unrestricted activities within 6-8 weeks.
